Lexus RX 450h
Lexus knew that it wasn’t only sedans that could benefit from hybrid technology, which is why they created the RX 450h, the world’s first luxury utility hybrid. Its Atkinson Cycle gasoline engine converts more energy generated during engine combustion into mechanical energy which, combined with the RX 450h’s hybrid engine, allows this luxury sport utility vehicle to lead its class with 29 mpg. Those miles are cleaner miles too, as the RX’s produces 70% less smog-forming emissions than its competitors.
The RX 450h doesn’t concede performance in order to achieve its efficiency—its 295 horsepower V6 engine performs like a V8 when needed. However, when seeking to conserve more energy, there’s ECO Mode, which alters the air conditioning’s drain on the engine and regulates throttle response to deliver more efficient acceleration. There’s even EV Mode, where the RX 450h can rely solely on battery power. That’s the flexibility provided by the RX, allowing the driver to choose either power or efficiency depending on the situation.
